In 1984 John Elway, a graduate of Stanford University, became the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback. Although famed for the strength of his passes and his agility, Elway's career began slowly with the team. His inexperience in the NFL led to a poor first season, but continued practice both on and off the field led to tremendous gains for both Elway and the Denver team. Elway and the Broncos made it to the Super Bowl in 1987, 1988, and 1990, though they lost each time.
