VICTOR VASARELY
Victor
Vasarely was born in the year 1908 in Hungary, but grew up in
France. Known for optical art, he used shapes, wiggly lines, and
concentric patterns that had impact on the physiology and
psychology of vision. Vasarely was dedicated to the scientific
investigation of vision which is so important to virtual reality
today. Vasarely was a member of the OP art movement or
"optical art." This graphic art form allowed objects to
merge three dimensionally through the use of color. The paintings
look like they are in relief. Op art does not tell us what we
actually see. When looking at a Vasarely painting you receive
different information no matter from what distance you are
viewing it. We are forced to move back and forth in the painting.
In his paintings,Vasarely's subjects move,
expand, contract, and squirm. The paintings engage the viewers so
that they are drawn into the painting and interact with the
painting at different distances. The viewer becomes involved with
the painting, just as the participant does in virtual reality.
