What is Virtual Reality

Immersion and Interactivity are the Key

Virtual reality (VR) allows the human imagination to create shapes and sounds though the use of a human /computer interface that appears real to our senses. The computer takes over our imagination and thoughts and turns them into simulation and virtual worlds that seem real to us.

VR simulations are built on immersion and interactivity. The individuals interacting in a VR experience really believes they are there in a virtual world. To make this happen, the world need to be interactive so that the individuals become a participant with the world. They believe that they can move around and interact as if they were physically there. Through this sense of "reality" the individual interactively manipulates objects that are found in the virtual world.

How Does it Work?

There are three things needed to create a virtual world, computers, special software, and the individual. By combining these three elements, a room, a school, games, adventure, can all be created. When you take imagination and technology and put them together, VR can work. Virtual reality is just another step in man's quest to communicate and be creative. Today by using sight, sound, and movement, the computer/human interface can put together virtual worlds that are interactive. While these systems are not very far advanced, they are slowly evolving into more advanced systems.

Virtual reality works with input devices (such as joysticks, mice, helmets, glasses, and wands)that record and measure electronic signals into a physcial world. The output devices allow our brain to process the computer physical world that is produced. The individual then interacts with this world. The brain interprets the sense data.

A reality engine is also needed. This is the main power of the virtual reality system. It processes the information and creates the world. It is made up of either a group of computers, or one powerful computer, since it needs to generate complex graphics. The processing is done in "real time" so that there is not any lag in the virtual world. (Problems with the Mars Pathfinder Mission have encountered lag with the operation of their VR equipment because of the distance the signal has to travel from the Earth to Mars. They have had delays in their mission because of this lag.)
