The eye, our window to the outside world, allows us to view the beauties of nature
and the beauties of life. A view through any window, through
any camera lens, is clearest when unobstructed by objects that result in distortion
of the objects being viewed. The eye has evolved in such a way that a similar objective
has been achieved. It is composed of life tissues that require continous nourishment
for survival. The mechanisms by which this metabolic energy is derived do not place
particles in the light path to interfere with the process of vision. The cells through
which light must pass do not have high numbers of mitochondria or other subcellular
organelles that would scatter light. For this reason, glycolysis, for which the enzymes
are soluble, plays a major role in energy production.
