Lee Kuan Yew

The first minister
of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, was born to a wealthy
Chinese family. Before he was admitted to the
English bar in 1950, he studied at Cambridge,
England. He became a popular nationalist In 1954,
he leader after his return. |
| He was also a member
of the delegation that negotiated
Singapores independence from the British in
1956-58. He became the Prime Minister in 1959,
after his partys victory in the subsequent
elections. |

Lee brought
Singapore into the Federation of Malaysia in
1963. However, Singapore was forced to withdraw
in 1963 as the Malay was feared of Chinese
domination. |
The city state, under his increasingly restrictive
rule, became a centre of international trade and
relatively prosperity in Asia. He retained his leadership
of the ruling Peoples Action Party (PAP) even after
he resigned as Prime Minister in November 1990.
