Lee Kuan Yew

The first minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, was born to a wealthy Chinese family. Before he was admitted to the English bar in 1950, he studied at Cambridge, England. He became a popular nationalist In 1954, he leader after his return.
He was also a member of the delegation that negotiated Singapore’s independence from the British in 1956-58. He became the Prime Minister in 1959, after his party’s victory in the subsequent elections.   Lee brought Singapore into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. However, Singapore was forced to withdraw in 1963 as the Malay was feared of Chinese domination.

The city state, under his increasingly restrictive rule, became a centre of international trade and relatively prosperity in Asia. He retained his leadership of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) even after he resigned as Prime Minister in November 1990.
