  Towards Independence
Before the Japanese in World War II defeated British, people of Singapore of their powers respected them. After the war, people of Singapore felt that British were not as powerful they failed to protect Singapore.   They felt that British should give up Singapore rule. But British were reluctant as they can use Singapore as a port and naval base. However seeing the determination in the people, the British decided to give in slowly.

A Summary To Independence

  • 1948 ----- Singapore’s first election
  • 1955 ----- limited self-government. David Marshall as chief                   Minster.
  • 1959 ----- full self-government. Lee yew hock as chief Minster.
  • 1963 ----- Singapore was part of federation of Malaysia.
  • 1965 ----- Singapore become independence.
April 1946

Singapore was separated from strait settlement. A British governor ruled it. An advisory council was set up. The governor choose all members of it. People were not allowed to chose. There was no democracy in Singapore.

  1948

The British governor set up a legislative council. They allowed some members to be elected. The Progressive Party was formed. This party consisted of English educated and had high or middle income. Progressive Party won three seats out of six seats. (The other three were won by independents.)

1951

The number of elected menders turned from six to nine. Progressive Party won six seats, the Front won two seats and the last seat was won by independence. As the main party was Progressive Party, it worked closely with the British governor. It believed to adopt a slow pace.

The plan

New parties like labour front and people action party had different plans. They fought for better condition for workers and higher pays for them. They saw that self-government was necessary. Thus British was forced to give self-government.   By giving limited self- government, local representative controlled less important parts such as health and housing. More important parts such as country relation, armed forces and police force were controlled by British Minster.

New form of government

Under new form of government, the legislative council replaces the legislative assembly. In the assembly, there was more elected members. However British still remain as powerful as before.

Execution of plan ---- the 1955 election

More people participated in this election than the 1948 one. Various party fought hard to get the public to vote. Party leaders made house to house visits gave speech, distributed pamphlets. On the night of 2 April 1955, when the result was announced, the labour front won the most seats.

After the election......

David Marshall

Since labour front won the most seats, it was the ruling party. As the chief Minster David Marshall did not enjoyed much respect. He did get a proper respect until he threatened to build his office at empress place. He also urged to give full                               self-government to Singapore.

When London did not grant Singapore self-government, David was so disappointed that he stepped                                                             down from the seat of chief                                                             Minster.

Achieving full self-government

Lim Yew Hock

After David Marshall stepped down from the seat of chief Minster, Lim Yew Hock took over his seat in 1956 when the communists and pro communists’ problem was very active. They carried out riots and strikes. With the help of the British troop, Lim yew hock managed to solve the                               problem. This pleased the British.

The second Madeira talks in London in 1957

Lim yew hock went to London in 1957 to ask for full self-government. The British agreed and Singapore would have its full self-government after the 1959 election.

The 1959 election

In 1957, a law was passed to let people in Singapore to become Singaporean easier. Thus, more people were allowed to vote in 1959. Voting was also made compulsory. News of the election was spread through newspaper, radio, and pamphlets. People often attended election rallies, as they were enthusiastic about it.
