Social Medical Care Services

Nowadays, if we were ill, we cam seek our family doctors for minor cases or go to accident or emergency for major cases. Most Asian lived in dirty places.

Early medical cares

Little was done to protect the people in the 19th century. The government had only a few doctors to take care of the sick soldiers.

In 1844, Asians and Europeans contributed money to build a hospital. Tan Tock Seng contributed the most and thus the hospital was named after him.

The Europeans were the healthiest community in the east as they enjoyed healthy life. They had better living condition and medical care.   The Asians were different from European in lifestyle. Asians were mostly poor. They had disease like malaria and cholera etc.

Most of the Asians lived in dark dirty shop houses. It was worst in china town. It was overcrowded with Asians. Rubbish was all over the place.

Europeans were ashamed to see so many beggars.

In 1829, taxes were imposed on meats. The tax was used to support a hospital. But it was overcrowded and dirty. Patients got worse there. The tax was stopped and little money was used to run the place.

In the 19th century, some businessman set up Thong Chai Medical Institution for the poor. The government set up a general hospital too.

Improvement in medical care and services

A medical college

Asian requested the government to build a medical college to train local doctors.

More hospitals

Different hospital catering to various needs was set up. New discovery was made to cure diseases for example, malaria and cholera.
