Interestingly enough, the word "tank" originates from a security measure implemented by the British when shipping these armored vehicles in wooden crates, which were identified with the sole word: "tank."
The Mark I, therefore, is essentially the first real tank ever built. It's unfortunate predecessor, the Little Willy, failed to meet the British Department of Defense's requirements; specifically, with regard to crossing trenches wider than 5 feet.
The Mark I was either "male" or "female" depending on its weaponry. Fifty-seven mm guns were outfitted on the "male" versions, and the "female" versions had an extra 7.7 mm machine gun in place of the 57 mm guns.
