Days of Remembrance. New York: International Center for Holocaust Studies Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, 1989.
This guide for military commemorative observances of the Holocaust contains a selection of poem, essays, and other writings pertaining to the Holocaust and the subject of Antisemitism. Some of them are dismal descriptions of endless piles of bodies or bones, while others are hopeful reminders of that which we take for granted. It attempts to delineate ways to use our remembrance as a "power of good."
Goldberg, William. Personal Interview. 12 Jan. 1997.
William (or Velvel, his Yiddish name) Goldberg was born in the United states less than a decade after his parents and their families emigrated from Russia to escape religious persecution. In our interview he told us about his family, and his life as a Jew growing up in Mattapan in the early 1920's and 30's.
Kramer, Sydelle & Masur, Jenny, Ed. Jewish Grandmothers. Boston, MA: Beacon Press, 1976.
The editors have compiled extensive personal accounts of ten Jewish women who triumphed through the ordeals of Antisemitism, immigration, the Depression, and poverty. We used this source for first hand documentation of Antisemitism at the turn of the twentieth century.
Snyder, Louis L. The Dreyfus Case: A Documentary History. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 1973.
The first documentary history of the Dreyfus case, first published in 1907, this book provides contemporaneous documents, pictures, cartoons, and commentary. It contains a chronology of the case, courtroom drawings, and newspaper cartoons that illustrate the public opinions prevalent at the time of the trial.
The Anti-Defamation League. "Confronting Anti-Semitism: The Pyramid of Anti-Semitism (visual)."
This visual was among information provided by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith during an information session we attended. The presentation discussed definitions of Antisemitism and methods for reaction to acts of Antisemitism. The Anti-Defamation League takes legal action in cases of hate crimes, discrimination, and other displays of Antisemitism. The presentation highlighted the modern effects of Antisemitism throughout history, providing a context and a motive for historical study.
Barnavi, Eli. A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People. New York: Schocken Books, 1992.
This book is very summary in its coverage of Jewish history, but nonetheless quite useful for quick information about historical events and historical illustration.
Berenbaum, Michael. The World Must Know: The History of the Holocaust as Told in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Boston, MA: Little, Brown, and Company, 1993.
One of the publications of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, this book features an informative introduction which provides a general overview of Antisemitic events that occurred before the Holocaust.
Comay, Joan. The Temple of Jerusalem. New York: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 1975.
The Temple of Jerusalem has been a spiritual center of the Jewish people since its creation. This book traces the history of the Temple and the Temple Mount, illustrating the disrespect shown for the Jews and their religious beliefs. It features illustrations that were useful to the graphical presentation of this material.
Glock, Charles Y. Christian Beliefs and Anti-Semitism. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, Publishers, 1966.
The Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith in cooperation with the Survey Research Center of UC Berkeley, did extensive research through surveys of various denominations of Christianity. The book provides data on Christian beliefs and Antisemitism obtained through these surveys.
Grant, Michael. The Jews in the Roman World. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1973.
The author explains how the triangular relationship among the Jews, Romans, and Greeks shaped the culture of the ancient world. Based on archaeology, this book draws many parallels with the Bible.
Microsoft Bookshelf. Computer Software. New York: Columbia University Press, 1995. CD-ROM.
We used the chronology provided in this software package to search for events exhibiting Antisemitism. The software was of limited use because it did not provide in-depth descriptions of events or people, and the data occasionally showed disparities or conflicts.
Prager, Dennis & Telushkin, Joseph. Why the Jews?: The Reason for Antisemitism. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1983.
The authors were the director and the education director (respectively) of the Brandeis--Bardin Insitute in California. Their book was extremely useful, and provided an interesting and readily comprehensible explanation for Antisemitism, supported by examples from throughout Jewish history.
Rossel, Seymour. The Holocaust: The world and the Jews, 1933-1945. West Orange, New Jersey: Behrman House, Inc, 1992.

Schalit, Abraham. The World History of the Jewish People, Vol. VI: The Hellenistic Age. Jerusalem: Massada Publishing Co., 1972.
The illustrations in this reference were useful in illustrating Antisemitism during the Hellenistic age. This volume focused on the politics of Jews in Palestine in the last few centuries B.C.E.
Stern, Chaim ed. Gates of Prayer, the New Union Prayerbook. New York: Central Conference of American Rabbis, 1975.
We used this prayerbook as the source of quotations. They were taken from a reading for a Tisha b'Av service. Tisha b'Av (literally, the ninth of the month of Av) is the Jewish holiday commemorating the destruction of the Temple, and other tragedies that befell the Jews throughout time. This reading is very appropriate to our project, since it is describing how we must take a positive attitude when considering the effect of negative events upon our lives.
