The first work in knot theory was done by Friederich Gauss. He referred to knot theory as analysis situs. He prophesized that one day analysis situs would become a major field of mathematics, but not in his time. Not until Lord Kelvin published his theory that particles were knots in the ether, an invisible fluid that filled all space, would there be another interest in knot theory.
