The Greek philosophy Stoicism flourished from about 300 B.C. to 300 A.D. and was founded by the philosopher Zeno. Zeno and his followers believed that reson lead to the greatest human happiness beacause through reason man discards passion and focuses on controlling his life. Reason, Zeno set forth, was innate in all men and reason thus related all men to one another and related all mankind to God. The philosophy Cosmopolitanism built upon this idea by the concept of the universal citizen, that all men were citizens of the world and thus all were related. Stoics laid also the foundation for the idea natural law, that human or natural law is above and beyond civil law.
