Originating in Greece, Hedonism is the belief that pleasure is the highest good in life. In ancient Greece two groups of Hedonists existed. One group was the Cyrenaics that believed in pleasure of the body. The other group, the Epicureans, believed in the pleasure of the mind as the highest good in life. Both groups, however, claimed pleasure as the basis of their ethical philosophies. Modern hedonists, hedonistic Ulitarians, have modified the application of the idea of pleasure to include not merely the individual but the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
