Take up jogging and boxing...(boxing is good for the cross training bit and keeps you on your toes). Mind you, you'll probly want something that'll help build up your stamina and so forth...in which case long distance running and even using the rowing machine never hurts.
Talk with your doctor...always good to cross train.
