Elizabeth,
Don't listen to Britt. A low carb diet (since it's virtually impossible to cut out all carbohydrates) is, in my humble opinion, the best way to go and it won't hurt you, unless your about to be in the decathalon or some other event that takes MAJOR endurance and training, which I seriosly doubt is the case. My father weighed about 275lbs and went on an almost no high density carbohydrate diet and he has now lost about 75 lbs. He eats all of the protein and fruits and vegetables that he wants, but he just stopped eating sugars, food with white flour(i.e. bread, pasta, etc.), and a few other foods that contain high density carbohydrates. Believe it or not, you don't get fat by eating fat (like lard and animal fats) you get fat by taking in foods with energy that you body doesn't use and stores as fat (high density carbohydrates are full of energy--that's why football players eat a lot of pasta and bread). I hope that this advice has been helpful. Just remember that this is only the first step. You can lose weight, but to get toned you must have some sort of regular exercise plan--that's the hard part. Good Luck!! :)
