: have you tried swimming yet? it's an excellent workout for all parts of the body and great calorie-burner that requires almost no equipment. besides, water relieves much of the gravity related stress so it will be good for your leg. see if you like it. good luck!
I agree, swimming is an excellent way to lose weight and tone muscles! and it will keep you off your feet, so to speak! Swimming also forces you to use different muscles in your legs, so if there is a possible injury, it may be possible to still work out without causing further damage. Since you said you had a trainer, check with him, get some further ideas!
