The Space Station has long promised to become the first step in the long way to Mars, and it is about to become a reality. We will ask Mr. Passy questions about the feasibility of using the Space Station as an orbital assembly/launch facility for the Earth-Mars leg of a manned mission.
We will also ask him questions regarding the unique role that will be played by mission control during such a mission. The time lag in communications to Mars presents a totally new scenario for mission planning. Martian astronauts will not be able to receive immediate advice from their controllers on Earth, which poses very interesting problems that we will need to solve when planning the mission sequence and activities.
