It wasn't until mid-14th century that utensils were used. Still, the king had silver utensils, while others ate with utensils carved out of wood or animal horn. Trenchers, or stale crusts of bread from the previous day, were sometimes used as plates. After dinner, the gravy-soaked trenchers were thrown to the dogs or given to the poor.
