Vish-Amrit: Transform Poisoned Water Into Nectar

About

Our project is titled 'Vish-Amrit' where Vish is the Sanskrit word for poison and Amrit is for Nectar. Both the words combine to signify our AIM: To transform POISONED contaminated water into pure NECTAR.

Water is the elixir of life and is depleting at a very fast rate in the world. While most people struggle with scarce availability of water, the others, who have access to it use water which is contaminated with pathogens and chemicals. Most of the water purification techniques in use today have multiple disadvantages.

We have thus decided to focus our project on providing firstly, access to one and all and secondly, to purify contaminated water in environment friendly ways.

Our first stage of the project would involve investigations into the present water situation in our city, New Delhi. We will be conducting surveys and procuring statistics from the Water Board to have a clear understanding of the issue.

Our second stage of the project will address the various ways to purify water and a critical analysis of their pros and cons.

We will then begin with the experimental stage of our project where we will check whether our solution of using fruit peels as water purifiers works or not and how efficient it is. This will be based on the principle of adsorption of metals by a constituent of fruit peels called pectin.

Our last stage would involve campaigning and spreading awareness on water conservation among school children and people in our neighborhoods.

Our students will apply 21st Century skills while working on this project like Critical Thinking skills, Creativity, Teamwork, Communication, Technology and Self-Direction.

With the medium of this project, our students will spread awareness on the grave need for mankind to start conserving water. Using visuals like pictures, videos, posters etc. , the project will make the task more interesting and fun! The project will also provide an environment friendly way to purify water which can be incorporated as one of the mainstream methods in the world.

Vish-Amrit is an honest endeavor and we hope that it will make a difference.

The project's essential problem, question or issue:
Addressing the water crisis in the world by conducting a special case study in New Delhi, India. Accessibility and contamination of water are major issues since the city has a population of over 13 million. Through this case study, we tried to lay emphasis on the grave issue of water scarcity.
