• Education can be Fun!

  We created a bulletin board with information on managing your emotions and how to avoid violence. We also created some comics and pasted them in the bulletin board. We had a lot fun. We added a QR Code in which students could see a video recorded by the "Zero to Heroes" team. We created a game in the internet based on the information that was in the cross street that they demonstrated what they learned. It was a total success.

  (Spanish Version) Hicimos un bulletin con información del manejo de emociones y como evitar la violencia. Hicimos unos cómics y los pegamos en el "bulletin board". Nos divertimos muchísimo. Añadimos un QR Code con el cual los estudiantes podrían acceder y ver un video grabado por el equipo “Zero to Heroes”. Creamos un juego en internet basado en la información que se encontraba en el bulletin board para que demostraran lo aprendido. Éxito total.

Sensitization and Empathy

• No more lectures, we want other types of activities!

  A few times we were offered conferences related to various issues and took advantage of it, but we sometimes feel that teenagers need to speak to us differently, using examples that force us to think. For this reason, we decided to look for violent cases that surprised us the most in recent years. These were the cases of Francheska Duarte and Diego Segurola. We wanted students to see real examples of how violence has attacked our island; so we created conversations where students could express through a different means. We made a bit of a search to find Diego and Francheska. We contacted Diego through a mutual friend and Francheska through a social network.

  (Spanish Version) ¡No más conferencias queremos otro tipo de actividad! En ocasiones nos han ofrecido conferencias relacionadas a diversos temas y las aprovechamos pero a veces sentimos que los jóvenes necesitamos que nos hablen de manera diferente y con ejemplos que nos hagan reflexionar. Por esta razón decidimos buscar los casos de violencia que más nos impactaron en los últimos años. Estos fueron los casos de Francheska Duarte y Diego Segurola. Pretendíamos que los estudiantes vieran ejemplos reales de cómo la violencia ha atacado a nuestra Isla por esto creamos conversatorios donde los estudiantes se pudieron expresar mediante diferentes medios. Hicimos una búsqueda para encontrar a Diego y a Francheska porque Puerto Rico es pequeño pero no todos nos conocemos. A Diego lo conseguimos a través de un amigo mutuo y a Francheska mediante una red social.

• Wear the T- Shirt for a good cause and Spread the Word!

  We designed a shirt and made a presale of the same for 3 days throughout the entire school where adults, teachers, and students joined. This shirt was designed with the idea that wherever you go to, you can spread the word and help you understand that there is a way to have a Puerto Rico without violence. Profits were used to finance the cost of the shirt and contribute to the cause of Francheska who lost her legs because of the accident and will be submitted to some treatments and costly operations. We sold 156 shirts, a great achievement in a school where there are approximately 400 students.

  (Spanish Version) Diseñamos una camisa y realizamos una preventa de la misma durante 3 días a través de todo el Colegio en donde adultos, maestros y estudiantes se unieron. Esta camisa se diseño con la idea de que a donde quiera que vayan con ella puesta, llamarán la atención y le harán entender a muchos que podemos tener un Puerto Rico mejor sin violencia. Las ganancias se usaron para costear los gastos de la camisa y aportar a la causa de Francheska que perdió sus piernas debido al accidente que tuvo y se someterá a algunos tratamientos y operaciones costosas. Vendimos 156 camisas, un gran logro en una escuela donde hay aproximadamente 400 estudiantes.

• First Forum Transmitted via Internet (52 views so far)

  We carried out a meeting with the Lic. Gloria Morales, an expert in cases involving violence. We discussed two cases involving the types of violence that we worked with. These were the cases of Francheska Duarte, hit by her boyfriend while he was driving in a car and Diego Segurola, Patricia’s boyfriend, who died when she struck by a bullet while she was being used as a shield in San Juan. We invited other organizations and schools to participate via the Internet. We had the opportunity to communicate with the participants and they could give us their questions and comments through "backchannels" at Thinkquest.org and Web 2.0 tool. Gloria Morales handed out brochures where they give us recommendations on how to control our anger and avoid being violent.

  (Spanish Version) Llevamos a cabo un conversatorio con la Licenciada Gloria Morales, experta en casos que envuelven la violencia. Discutimos dos casos que envuelven los tipos de violencia que trabajamos y tocaron de cerca a Puerto Rico. Estos fueron los casos de Francheska Duarte, atropellada por su pareja sentimental y Diego Segurola, joven novio Patricia, que falleció al ser impactada por una bala debido a que la utilizaron de escudo en San Juan. Invitamos a otras organizaciones y escuelas a participar vía Internet. Nos vieron en vivo y tuvieron la oportunidad de comunicarse con los participantes y hacer sus preguntas y comentarios a través de “backchannels” en Thinkquest.org y una herramienta de la Web 2.0. Allí se dieron los mejores consejos sobre cómo atacar la violencia y no ser parte de ella. La licenciada repartió literatura donde nos hacen recomendaciones para controlarnos en momentos de enojo y para evitar ser violentos.

• Second Forum transmitted via Internet (32 views so far)

  We carried out the second case, but this time with the presence of our heroes and protagonists, Diego Segurola and Francheska Duarte; who told us of their experience and were example for us. It was aired on the Internet website "ustream.com" and questions were made through the "backchannel" with Thinkquest.org and "Today's meet". There, they answered our questions and interacted with us. The meeting was a great success and we got to New York via internet.

  (Spanish Version) Llevamos a cabo el segundo conversatorio pero esta vez con la presencia de nuestros héroes protagonistas, Diego Segurola y Francheska Duarte quienes nos hablaron de su experiencia y fueron de ejemplo para nosotros. Se transmitió por Internet a través de la página “ustream.com” y se hicieron preguntas a través del “backchannel” que se hizo con Thinkquest.org y “Today’s meet”. Allí, ellos contestaron nuestras preguntas y se retrataron con algunos de nosotros. El conversatorio fue todo un éxito y llegamos hasta Nueva York vía internet.

  We start with one of our most important powers, the commitment. This is evidence that you are leaving violent behavior to aside and will soon begin to be heroes by being a good example and making a difference.

  (Spanish Version) Arrancamos con uno de nuestros poderes más importantes, el compromiso. Éste evidencia que dejaremos los comportamientos violentos a un lado y comenzaremos a ser héroes dando el ejemplo y siendo la diferencia.

• Participation in Montessori's Family Day

  As part of our strategy to help create awareness, we determined that we had to have the support of the entire school community (teachers, students, parents and other relatives); and what better activity to bring our message than the Family Day at school. Year after year, this activity concentrates huge amount of people who visit our school. In this activity, we overcame our shyness and we managed to help 98 people sign the commitment. We delivered booklets that summed up the project, our mission, goals and activities. Parents were also interested in our project. Many of them took photos dressed as heroes for our project.

• Participando en el Día Familiar de Montessori

  (Spanish Version)Como parte de nuestra estrategia para ayudar a crear conciencia determinamos que teníamos que tener el apoyo de toda la comunidad escolar (maestros, estudiantes, padres y demás familiares). Y qué mejor actividad para llevar nuestro mensaje que El Día Familiar de la escuela. Año tras año, esta actividad concentra a la mayor cantidad de personas que visitan nuestra escuela. En ésta vencimos nuestra timidez y logramos que 98 personas firmaran el compromiso. Entregamos un opúsculo que resumía el proyecto, nuestra misión, las metas y las actividades. Los padres se interesaron en nuestro proyecto. Muchos de ellos se tomaron fotos vestidos de héroes para solidarse con nuestro proyecto.

• Participation in the Extreme Technology Challenge

  We communicated with Alexis Torres, the President of a company in Puerto Rico which enables children, teenagers and adults in the use of technology; every year they perform an activity called the Extreme Technology Challenge and this year the theme was "Alto a la Violencia" or “Halt to Violence”. It allowed us to make a presentation of our project. Thus motivate about 400 teenagers and adults to join our project.

  (Spanish Version)Nos comunicamos con Alexis Torres, el presidente de una compañía en Puerto Rico que capacita a niños, jóvenes y adultos en el uso de la tecnología, debido a que todos los años ellos realizan una actividad llamada Extreme Technology Challenge y este año el tema era “Alto a la Violencia”. Nos permitió unirnos y hacer una presentación de nuestro proyecto. De esta manera motivamos a sobre 400 jóvenes para que se unieran a nuestro proyecto.

• Real Heroes

  We made some comics with photos of all those heroes who, in some way or another, helped with their good example to the "Zero to Heroes" project. They complied with its mission, its purpose, raised awareness of the damage that makes us violent and liked trying to reduce it and be a good example for others. We displayed them in the school.

  (Spanish Version) Hicimos unos cómics en los cuales pusimos las fotos de todos aquellos héroes que de alguna u otra manera ayudaron con su ejemplo y con sus acciones a que el proyecto “Zero to Heroes” cumpliera con su misión y su propósito, concienciar del daño que nos hace el ser violentos y como tratar de disminuirlo y ser ejemplo para otros. Los exhibimos por el colegio.
