Talking with Real Heroes

During the meeting, we received Diego Segurola and Francheska Duarte, young victims of violence in PR (we analyzed their cases in the first discussion). For us this meeting was poignant, productive, inspiring and impressive.

Again we see the interest and motivation of students and teachers who participated. They presented their comments and questions on Thinkquest.org (used as a backchannel). It was an excellent dynamic, because everyone had the opportunity to participate by asking questions. This time the discussion was attended by students and teachers of 9th, 10th, 11th and the interest generated by the first discussion added the 12th grade. In our effort to unite and take our message to more young people and families we, once again send the discussion through a channel on the Internet. We are proud of the fact that more and more people visit the channel. In the first discussion we had 7 visits to the channel while the discussion was carried out and to this day we have had 51 visits to that channel. Several of these were groups of students with their teachers from different schools of PR. In this sense, technology has helped carry our message beyond the school.

Durante el conversatorio recibimos la visita de Diego Segurola y Franchesca Duarte, jóvenes víctimas de violencia en la Isla (analizamos sus casos en el primer conversatorio). Para nosotros este conversatorio fue conmovedor, productivo, inspirador e impactante. 

Nuevamente percibimos el interés y la motivación de los estudiantes y maestros que participaron. Éstos expusieron sus comentarios y preguntas en plataforma de Thinkquest.org (se utilizó como backchannel). Fue una excelente dinámica porque todos tuvieron la oportunidad de participar haciendo preguntas. Esta vez participaron estudiantes y maestros de 9no, 10mo, 11mo y por el interés que generó el primer conversatorio se añadió el grupo de 12mo. En nuestro afán de unir y llevar nuestro mensaje a más jóvenes y familias transmitimos nuevamente el conversatorio a través de un canal en Internet. Nos enorgullece que cada vez más personas visitan el canal. En el primer conversatorio tuvimos 7 visitas al canal mientras se llevaba a cabo el conversatorio y al día de hoy tenemos 51 visitas a ese canal. Varias de estas fueron de grupos de estudiantes con sus maestros de diferentes escuelas de la Isla. En este sentido la tecnología ha ayudado a llevar nuestro mensaje más allá del Colegio.

Our Impressions of the Conversation...

 

Diego (represented the case of Patricia)

Francheska case

Expressed himself and his message fluently.

Lack of education

Francheska could not express herself easily due to her lack of education and shyness.

Diego is a just person; who motivated us to not judge the aggressors, because they were raised in various environments where it is sometimes normal to commit these acts.

In the case of Patricia, the aggressor was an orphan, because they killed his father due to drug problems; the mother also consumed drugs. The aggressor was 16 at the time of the event.

The aggressor’s parents blame Francheska that their son is in prison. That is the reason that they do not have that much communication with her. In this case, they support the actoins that their son committed against Francheska.

Patricia’s parents continue interacting with Diego; they do not blame him for what happened with Patricia.

She has fear of rejection.

Diego told us that education is key.

Francheska indicated that she did not receive information on what domestic violence was because she was not in school at the time; though she urged us to stay in school.

Diego’s life changed due to the incident. He constantly has the support of his family and friends. Still, he sometimes feels responsible for what happened to his girlfriend.

Francheska is a good mother, she is concerned about her daughter. She also has the support of her family and friends. Her life changed because of the fact that she lost her legs and cannot do the things she used to do before. Though she exceeds expectations each day to create a good example for her daughter.

Francheska explained that her aggressor’s family always criticized her on everything. That is one of the probable reasons of why he acted that way.

Se expresaba con fluidez y llevó su mensaje claramente.
Falta de educación
Franchesca no se podía expresar con facilidad por su falta de educación y timidez. 
Diego es una persona justa que nos motivó a no juzgar a los agresores debido a que fueron criados en diversos entornos donde a veces es normal cometer estos actos. 
En el caso de Patricia, el agresor es huérfano de padre debido a que lo mataron por problemas con drogas. Lo mataron frente al niño. La madre consumía drogas también. El agresor no estaba en la escuela y al momento del suceso tenía 16 años.
Los padres el agresor de Franchesca la culpan porque su hijo está en la cárcel. Por eso no se comunican con ella. En este caso apoyan las acciones que su hijo cometió contra Franchesca.
Los padres de Patricia continúan relacionándose con Diego. No lo culparon por la pérdida de su hija.
Tiene miedo al rechazo.
Diego nos indicó que la clave está en la educación.
Franchesca indicó que no recibió información sobre lo que era violencia doméstica porque no iba a la escuela. Nos exhortó a permanecer en la escuela.
La vida de Diego cambió debido al suceso por el cual pasó. Ha tenido el apoyo de su familia y amigos. Todavía a veces se siente responsable por la muerte de su novia.
Franchesca es una buena madre, se preocupa por su hija. Tiene el apoyo de su familia y amigos. Su vida cambió pues ya no puede hacer las cosas normales que hacía antes debido a que no puede caminar.  Sin, embargo se supera día a día para dar el ejemplo a su hija.
 
Franchesca expresó que la familia de su agresor siempre le consintió todo. Por eso actuaba de esa manera.

They Caught Our Attention...

  · For the first time both of them told students their experiences.

· Violence can touch us regardless of social class or education that we have. But if we are educated on the subject we will have more opportunities to avoid or commit violent acts.
·Diego and Francheska are willing to carry the message of non-violence.
·No matter the sentences given to the aggressors, the important thing is that they are young and they committed a crime which would put them in jail for a long time and that could have been avoided with education.  That is why this project means to carry the message to young people and their families.
·We are all responsible in a direct or indirect way of the society in which we live.
   Llamaron Nuestra Atención... ( Spanish Version)  
·Por primera vez ambos contaron sus experiencias a estudiantes.
· La violencia nos puede tocar no importa la clase social o la educación que tengamos. Pero si estamos educados al respecto tendremos más oportunidades de evitar o cometer actos violentos.
· Diego y Franchesca están en la mejor disposición de llevar el mensaje de la No Violencia.
· No importan las condenas que le den a los agresores, lo importante es que son jóvenes y que cometieron un delito que hará que estén en la cárcel por mucho tiempo y eso se pudo haber evitado con educación. Por eso este proyecto ayuda a llevar el mensaje a los jóvenes y a sus familias.
·Todos somos responsables de manera directa o indirecta por la sociedad en que vivimos.
· Cuando nos hablan jóvenes como nosotros prestamos más atención y nos ponemos en su lugar porque nos sentimos identificados.

Violence Before and After

  • How did you see violence before going through that situation?

    We saw it as something normal that happens every day in PR; we were concerned about it but we did not care that much about it, though we did feel sorry for those victims.

  • ¿Cómo veías la violencia antes de los conversatorios?

    La veíamos como algo normal que pasa en todo momento en PR que nos preocupaba pero no nos sensibilizábamos ante el dolor de las víctimas, los agresores y las familias de ambos.

  • How do you see the violence after going through that situation?

    After meeting these young people who went through violent events in Puerto Rico, we saw their sadness, strength, and weaknesses and affected us as if we were one of them or part of their relatives. We felt empathy for them and we are committed to help them and to do our part to prevent violent acts.

  • ¿Cómo ves la violencia después de los conversatorios?

    Después de conocer a estos jóvenes que pasaron por sucesos violentos en Puerto Rico pudimos ver su tristeza, fortaleza, debilidades y nos afectó como si fuéramos uno de ellos o parte de sus allegados. Sentimos empatía por ellos y nos sentimos comprometidos a ayudar y a poner de nuestra parte para evitar actos violentos.

In the End

In our conclusions reflected in the thought that we made during the first meeting we reiterate to know them. They are definitely real heroes! It was shocking to see Francheska without her legs. We can say that her daughter helps Francheska overcome obstacles for her; while Diego is an example of fortitude. We welcomed them and both showed willingness to continue collaborating in the project and to carry the message to young people and their families.

Al conocerlos nos reiteramos en nuestras conclusiones plasmadas en la reflexión que hicimos durante el primer conversatorio. ¡Definitivamente son héroes reales! Fue impactante ver a Franchesca sin sus piernas. Podemos decir que su hija la motiva superarse y lucha por ella. Mientras que Diego es un ejemplo de entereza y superación. Nos complace que ambos mostraron disposición para continuar colaborando en el Proyecto y llevando el mensaje a los jóvenes y sus familias.

  • Me di cuanta que todo comianza desde las personas que te rodean. Es importante aprender a escojer estas personas ya que son las que influyen en ti y es importante que lo hagan positivamente.

    Hay cosas que ocurren y son inevitables. Por esto es imperativo levantarnos, superarnos, seguir hacia adelante y cumplir nuestras metas.

  • Como dos personas que su vida les cambio de la noche a la manana han seguido hacia adelante & han luchado por cumplir sus metas. A diferencia de muchas personas en nuestra isla que les ocurre mucho menos que sus casos & se rinden fácilmente a la vida. También lo que hizo Diego en su caso es muy admirable porque para mi la violencia no se puede vencer con mas violencia, debemos dar el ejemplo & lo que nos ocurra promoverlo para que las personas habran sus ojos & se den cuenta de lo que está ocurriendo en nuestra isla para que las demás personas no lo hagan.
