Our generation is concerned about our future on Mars. We feel that more people need to understand what the environment on Mars is like so that they can have an educated opinion on colonizing the Red Planet.
The creators of the 1997, Thinkquest, "Footprints on Mars" web page in alphabetical order are:
Emily Coren
Hi! My name is Emily Deborah Coren and I am 14 years
old. I have just graduated from Owen Brown Middle School in Columbia, Maryland.
I am going to be a 9th grader at Oakland Mills High School in the Fall.
This is my first experience in HTML programming and computer applications.
I have a brand new Gateway 2000 computer at home. I play clarinet in the
school band and I participated in the Howard County Middle School Gifted
and Talented Band. I love animals. I have a Dalmatian named Sierra and lots
of fish. I would like to major in Ichthyology in college. I am also very
concerned about the preservation of species. I just completed my Girl Scout
Silver Award. For my Silver Award, my friend and I organized Scouts from
two counties to build an Oyster Reef in the Chesapeake Bay. We worked with
scientists from the Living Classrooms in Baltimore, Maryland. I also participate
in Girl Scouts Water Rats (canoeing), and Packs and Tracks (backpacking)
programs. I am a new member of Sea Explorer Scouts (SES), Columbia Ranger
Ship 361. SES is a coed sailing organization.
Scott Green. Hello! My name is Scott Austin Green and I am 15 years old. I
am a sophmore at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, MD,
where I take many classes in computer programming and
engineering. I have been working with HTML and have been programming it
for 2 1/2 years. I am a volunteer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center(GSFC)
where I work on developing sophisticated space related web pages. I obtained
a large number of the Mars images for the "Footprints on Mars"
web page from the National Space Science Data Center at GSFC. I work exclusively
on Macintosh computers. There are 5 Macs at my house (my Dad, Mom and Siter
use them too). I received my first Mac when I was ten. This is the second
year Brad and I have been working together. We entered the 1996 Thinkquest
Contest with a series of web pages about Very Low Frequency radio emissions.
The photo on the left is of me at Rice University in Houston, TX where I
support my Dad while he taught at the International Space University for
three weeks this summer. While there, I went to many classes on the exploration,
colonization, and terraforming of Mars. I would like to attend Rice University
in the future and get my Ph.D. in astronautical engineering. In my free
time I like to play Lacrosse and the guitar. I have played the guitar for
4 years, and I currently play in a local band.
Brad Olsan I am 18 years old . I have lived in Ontario, CA all my life. I
attend Chaffey High School.
There
I spent four quick years and graduated with honors. I received numerous
honors and awards for academics, among other things. I've been playing the
clarinet for almost ten years now. I was the section leader in the Chaffey
Marching Tiger Pride for two years and the drum major during my Senior year.
I played the melaphone and trumpet in the band as well. Of the various Golden
State Exams I took, I received High Honors scores for Geometry and English,
Honors in Chemistry, and recognition in first year algebra. The CSF chapter
at my school named me a lifetime member, or Sealbearer. I've been snow skiing
since I was two. Vail, Colorado is my home skiing town. Maybe someday I'll
live there. I represented Chaffey High School at California's Golden Boy's
State, last year. Being an engineering type, I excel in math and science.
I passed AP Calculus, and enjoyed several other great courses. One class
I enjoyed in particular was offered only at Chaffey. The NESC club/class
explored the Natural Environment of Southern California.
We took camping trips for as long as a week to beautiful
areas of the Southwest Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. Weekend trips were
held locally, (e.g. Death Valley, Mammoth, Mojave, Santa Cruz, Island, San
Andreas, as well as others). My Physics teacher, Mr. Pine, strongly influenced
my academic interests and prepared me for college. Through interesting labs
and creative teaching, Mr. Pine introduced me to the world of Physics. From
Thermodynamics to Electric Circuits, Mr. Pine covered the field completely...for
a high school course. I will be attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA
in the fall. I'm planning to major in Electrical Engineering. The campus
is a mere ten minutes from the beach and surrounded by luscious rolling
hills. The small town environment is just what I need. I hope to succeed
in making advancements in technology that will improve the conditions of
life for many people. Education is very important to me, and I will use
it to the advantage of the world when the time comes. God Bless.
