Lesson 3 Approximate Time of Completion: 2 Weeks
Target Audience: 9th-12th Health Students

Objectives:

At the end of the two-week lesson, the students will be able to:

  1. Enumerate their caloric intake
  2. Suggest improvements for each other's diets
  3. Understand how and why foods are categorized into groups

Materials Needed:

Activities:

  1. Break students into groups -- this time, it doesn't matter with whom they're grouped
  2. Send them to the Healthy Eating section at http://library.advanced.org/tq1997/11960/healthy/index.htm
  3. Students should read the information provided in Recommended Dietary Allowance, The Teens' RDA, and Planning Your Calorie Intake
  4. Have them use the forms provided for Good Eating Habits and Fat Allowance Calculator; tell them to note their score on the Eating Habits results page for future comparison
  5. The students should then read the pages Cutting Down Fats and Cholesterol, Tasty Food without Salt, and Food Guide Pyramid
  6. As a class draw the Food Guide Pyramid and go over the different categories
  7. Finally, the students each should write an expository essay, explaining what they could do to improve their diet
