Most of us purchase food from stores. It may be convenient, but it is possible to get spoiled food now and then. But this can be avoided if some techniques covered in this section are considered.

Buy frozen food from reputable companies.

Buy shellfish from reputable stores.

Check Your Food!

Canned Food

Don't buy if... Buy if...
the can is swollen, dented, damaged or rusty

the can shows signs of leakage (e.g. label badly stained, tiny pinholes)

the can is rust-free

the seams of the can are not dented

the can has straight sides

the two flat ends of the can curve slightly inwards

Dairy Products

Dried Food

"Do"s "Don't"s
Choose dried that has been properly packaged Buy moldy food, including moldy dried mushrooms, as they might be poisonous

Eggs

"Do"s "Don't"s
Choose eggs round at one end and pointed at the other

Choose eggs with strong, regular and clean shells

Buy eggs with cracked shells

Buy eggs that show pronounced ridges on the shells

Buy eggs with stained or discolored shells

Fish & other Marine Products

Frozen Food

Buy frozen food last

Wrap the frozen food in several layers of paper or put it in an insulated container and transport it home quickly

Buy foods that have ice on the pack (may indicate that the food has been partially thawed and refrozen)

Buy frozen foods in torn packages or packages with imperfect seals

Meat & Poultry

Prepackaged Perishable Food

Read labels carefully

Check expiration date

Buy food from stores where display cabinets are kept from 0 to 4 degree Celsius

Buy swollen food packages
