Africa
It was to be a great few-week long hunting in
African jungle.
On the
first of January Sienkiewicz found himself in Cairo, but he
missed the ship and had to stay in the city for a month. He made
only excursions to Alexsandria, Port Daid and Suez. In February
Sienkiewicz reached Zanzibar and next - in two weeks - Bangamoja.
He set out on a journey to the deserts and joungles of Africa but
after 10 days he had to return because he fel ill with fever.
From this abortive travel left "The letters from
Africa", almost all written in Europe, after the return. In
these letters author shows Africa by comparing it with Europe and
Poland. 20 years later Sienkiewicz wrote a novel for children
about adventures in Africa titled "In the desert and
jungle" (from which we reproduce this picture on the right).
While writing Sienkiewicz used the reminiscences from travel.
