Maria Romanowska

All started from letters from her and her mother - Mrs.Wolodkiewicz to Henryk Sienkiewicz. Wolodkiewicz family was a very rich stock with splendid connections. Mrs. Wolodkiewicz's sister led in Odessa house for orphans and Mr. and Mrs. Wolodkiewicz took one child from this house, it was Maria Romanowska, the fourth Henryk's Mary, for him - Marynuszka.. She has sent letters to him but he has hesitated because she was only 18 and he was 46 years old. Finally in 1893 in Wolodkiewicz's villa in Odessa he proposed to her and was accepted, they came back as official fiancee and fance.They left for Rome but there they had troubles with wedding and Heryk fighted with future mother-in-law. Sienkiewicz went to Kaltenleutgeben, Maria to Odessa. Not long he received a letter from Mrs.Wolodkiewicz which broke off the betrothal. He asked about respite and fictiously they were still engaged. June was the end of romance, but not for long. Five months later Marynuszka sent a letter and in Gastein followed the reconciliation. This time he asked her few times if she was sure and she has said yes. On the 11th of December 1893 they got married and next they went to Italy. Sienkiewicz was a little bit ill. They visited Vienna, Genua and Nervi, after 3 week-long correspondence with mother Maria called for her, after next three weeks she left him. He has sent many letters to her but unavailingly. Helena Wolodkiewicz - his mother-in-law started to tell that he was a tyrant. On the 19th of March 1896 the marriage was dissolved.
Marynuszka after two years got married but it wasn't successful marriage and broke down before first world war. She died in the age of 91.
