strikeout

Definition
A pitcher earns a strikeout whenever:

  • A batter is out on a third strike legally caught by the catcher
  • A batter is out on a third strike not caught when first base is occupied and there are less than 2 outs
  • A batter becomes a runner because the catcher didn't catch the third strike
  • A batter bunts foul on the third strike, except if the bunt results in a foul fly caught by a fielder. The batter is still out, but the fielder who caught the ball is given credit for the putout.

Scoring Note: If a batter leaves the game with two strikes, and the substitute batter is struck out, the strikeout is charged to the first batter. If the substitute batter does anything other than strikeout to complete the at bat, the action is charged to the substitute batter.
