stolen base

Definition
A runner is credited with a stolen base whenever he advances to the next base without the help of a hit, putout, force out, fielder's choice, error, balk, passed ball, or wild pitch, with a few exceptions:

  • the runner still receives credit for a stolen base if the runner starts for the next base before the pitcher throws the pitch, and the pitch is a wild pitch or passed ball.
  • the runner still receives credit for a stolen base if the catcher throws a wild throw in trying to prevent the stolen base
  • the runner receives credit for a stolen base if he advances a base after evading a run down play while trying to steal a base or being picked off
  • if a runner is thrown out before reaching the next base during a double or triple steal, no other runner receives credit for a stolen base
  • the runner does not receive credit for a stolen base if he overslides a base and is tagged out
  • the runner is charged as "caught stealing" if, in the scorer's judgement, he reaches the next base as a result of a muffed throw
  • the runner does not receive credit for a stolen base if it is only because the other team does not care about the stolen base and does not take action to stop it (undefended steal). Under this case it is scored as a fielder's choice
