fielder's choice

Definition
Fielder's choice occurs when the fielder decides to throw to a base other than first in order to put out a preceding runner.

Fielder's choice is also used by scorer's to describe:

  • a batter runner who takes one or more extra bases when the fielder handling his hit attempts to put out a preceding runner
  • a runner who advances (other than by stolen base or error) while a fielder is attempting to put out another runner
  • a runner who steals a base only because the other team is indifferent to the steal and takes not action to stop it (undefended steal)
