How do I download a file?

Now that you know what shareware and freeware are, let's figure out how to get some of these files. This page also explains how to save an image from a page (saving a page's text was covered in the previous tutorial).
Downloading directly from a web page
When you visit a web site that has a link to a file for downloading, all you have to do is click on the link, enter a filename, and save it. Your browser's dialog boxes should explain themselves.
Downloading from an FTP site
Sometimes you will visit an FTP site. At FTP sites, the files appear similar to the files in your computer's file manager. They are alphabetized, show extensions, sizes, and dates, and include directories. Navigate through the lists, clicking only once on links (files/directories), until you find the file you're looking for. Often times, there will be a readme file that describes all the files in the current directory. When you've found the file you're looking for, click once on it. Your browser will bring up a dialog box asking you for a filename. FTP sites can also be navigated with a FTP program. Tutorial 11 explains FTP in greater detail.
Saving a (web page) graphic
Saving an image from a web page is really easy. Just go to the page that contains the graphic you want, right click on the image with your mouse (on Macs, you must hold down the mouse button for a few seconds) and select Save Image As... from the menu that appears. Give the image a name and click Save. That's it!
