| Modem (Dial-Up) | |
| · | A modem is a piece of hardware, for your computer, that allows it to call another computer through a telephone line. (Modem stands for Modulate/Demodulate.) Most cities and communities have Internet Service Providers that can be called up locally. Those that don't, probably have an ISP in a nearby city, however the call may be long-distance. Modems can be inside the computer (called Internal) or outside the computer (External), connected by a cable. Most modems come with software to run the modem from your computer. |

| Network Card (Network) | |
| · | You remember what a network is, don't you? Well, that is one of the ways to connect to the Internet, the largest network in the World. A computer that is directly connected to a network has a piece of hardware inside it, called a network card. This card allows the computer to connect with the other computers on the network, in addition to the Internet, if the network is connected to it. Many times, a network will be slower than a single connection to the Internet, due to high traffic on the network. When only one computer is using the connection, there is no traffic to slow it down. |
