This tesselation system consists of interlocking rhombi, each of which contains the entire insect shaped motif. To fill the plane, the motif has been translated (or shifted) vertically, as if it were on rails. This process was then repeated to either side of the original. This is one of the simplest tessellation systems, using only one of four possible transformations.
