We didn’t think so. We all know the tale of the Emperor’s new clothes. It’s because people whose DNA was 99.9% identical to yours spoke up loudly against the obviously wrong that we can walk down the street without fear of encountering a naked emperor. Using logic and observation, these people -- whether smart-alec young kids or research scientists -- shielded our eyes from the likes of Louis the XIV while opening them to new horizons of learning and discovery. But before those horizons could be reached, they had a major obstacle before them: challenging the bias and superstition that clung to previous belief. Think about it a second. Our world is an anvil of science and technology, hammered by brilliant new theories and inventions that have crushed old, mistaken assumptions while leaving us largely better for the battery. Yet our world is far, far from perfect. That is precisely why we need young minds trained not to accept science sitting down.
