Illegal Questions

Anti-discrimination laws forbid future employers from not hiring someone because of discrimination on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, and arrest record. Therefore, if an interviewer asks a question that requires you tell them these things, it is illegal. Most of the time questions like these are asked because the interviewer doesn't know it is illegal or they are trying to ask a different question. For example, a question about marriage might actually be inquiring about the ability to relocate. So, if an interviewer asks you an illegal question, you can (1) tell them you won't answer it because it is illegal, or (2) address the underlying concern (I have no problem with relocation), or (3) say you aren't sure how the question relates to the job and ask for an explanation. This way you won't be subjecting yourself to discrimination.
