Do's and Don'ts


Do's

  • Do express yourself clearly with a strong voice.
  • Do dress for the occasion.
  • Do arrive ten to fifteen minutes early.
  • Do reveal specific goals in your career path.
  • Do shake hands firmly, showing self confidence.
  • Do make eye contact with the interviewer, displaying understanding.
  • Do have knowledge of the company, employer, and position to the greatest extent possible.
  • Do have prepared questions to ask that display your interest in the employer and the position.
  • Do display a sense of humor.
  • Do bring a pen and small notebook with you to the interview.
  • Do take an extra copy of your resume and a list of references with you to the interview.
  • Do know the interviewer's name and the correct pronunciation so it can be used throughout the interview.
  • Do take time to develop your answers.
  • Do follow-up with a thank you letter, reinforcing your interest.
  • Do contact the employer by phone if the interviewer does not contact you one week after the time from which he or she indicated you would he notified.
  • Do target what can be done better in the future. Make the experience a rewarding one, even if a position isn't offered.
  • Don'ts

  • Don't be overaggressive or conceited.
  • Don't show a lack of interest or enthusiasm.
  • Don't use too much slang in the conversation.
  • Don't emphasize money as your main interest, unless money is used as a motivator as it is in commission sales.
  • Don't expect to start out on top; be open to having to work your way up.
  • Don't display any dislike of past employers or education institutes.
  • Don't make excuses for unfavorable record factors.
  • Don't be indecisive.
  • Don't display intolerance or prejudice.
  • Don't be late for the interview.
  • Don't contradict yourself.
  • Don't take notes during the interview; jot down your notes afterwards.
  • Don't smoke or chew gum, even if it is offered or the interviewer is doing so.
