Resumes
Finding a job may be a difficult task, but having all of your information gathered and put on paper before an interview may help. A resume is filled with all of your information about you, your education and your past jobs. It is the "advertisement" you send to a company so that they will give you an interview. And you should take another copy of it with you to your interview to leave with them.
A resume should include personal information (like your name, address and phone numbers). It should show how your past has prepared you for the job you are seeking. Include the facts on your last and/or current job but stress what you were able to accomplish in those positions. Summer jobs, part-time jobs and temporary work can all be valuable in showing that you are a responsible person and capable of handling the new position you are seeking. Volunteer jobs and community service should also be noted.
Education is a very important area when it comes to getting a job. Give the details about your high school career, including its location, your grade point average, and year of graduation. Don't forget to mention your favorite subjects and how they relate to your career goals. If more than one school was attended, list them all.
Extracurricular activities, hobbies and interests can tell a lot about the kind of person you are. You don't have to list everything but don't forget to describe your computer skills, the languages you speak, and other specialized knowledge. Not only are they important, but what you do outside of school may be the things the interviewer remembers most.
And when you get the job, don't forget to update your resume!
Examples of Resumes
There are lots of styles of resumes, so we thought we'd let you write one and we'd post it in a gallery. Read one of the many books on how to write a resume (see the Library and Telegraph Office for details) and then email us a copy of your finished work. If your resume is a website, just send the url. Either way, we'll put a link in the boxes below.
