Basket Business Scores!
(based on a story in the Orange County Register, June 30, 1997)
There are many benefiting businesses in the world today. After all, what would you do without stores, or restaurants, or specialty shops. Kathi Kent had that idea when she went into business selling unique baskets from around the world. Varying in shapes, sizes, colors and materials, there are baskets for all kinds of people in all types of places. For example, Kent sells baskets from the Philippines, Africa, and many other locations. Materials range from Filipino gugo vine to cocoa palm bark to your basic light and dark rattan, as well as many different kinds of wire and wicker.
Kent began her business in January of 1997, getting the idea from a magazine article discussing business women. One of the self-made businesses was that of baskets, which appealed to Kent. She had always loved the creativity that parallels baskets. Two weeks after envisioning this business, the dream came true. Adding $4000 on her credit cards for the purchase of the franchise, inventory, business cards, letterhead, and other supplies, Kent initiated Bien' Baskets.
Jobs like these are self-made, so easier to come buy. No applications or interviews required. However, it is a lot harder to get the word out and make the money you could make in a well-known company. Kent took the suggestion of a friend, and threw basket parties. This helped spread the word of her business, and also supplied some money to keep the business up and running. A lot of fun is involved in the satisfaction, manufacturing, and selling of merchandise. However, if you decide to venture into this line of work, remember that with fun comes a lot of hard work.
