Welcome to Kathina! Kathina
Kathina is a main Buddhist festival in Thailand that is
celebrated during October or November. At this time,
the people of Buddhist communities express their
gratitude to the monks for keeping the Buddhist
religion alive. They bring gifts to the monks, such as
cloth for robes. A worthy monk is chosen to receive
a new robe, and then other monks are assigned to
make it. The monks then give blessings and tell
everyone why Kathina is so important. During this
time, it is said that acts of generosity will bring great
merit to those who perform them. Five monks who
have spent Vassa correctly must be present at the
festival. Vassa is the period of September and
October when heavy rain stops the monks from
wandering from place to place and causes them to settle down
in a temple to apply themselves more strictly
than usual to their religious way of life. An
important ceremony happens in Bangkok, the
capital of Thailand. The king of Thailand is rowed
to Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn) where he
presents monks with cloth for their robes.
