Kosciuszko was trained in engineering before coming to America. He fortified West Point and helped to create killing grounds at Saratoga by building fortications in such a way that the British were funneled into open areas. This helped the American army to defeat them. In addition, he went on to serve General Greene in the South as an engineering officer and was responsible for helping to save the American army on more than one occasion. he returned to Poland after the war where he led his fellow Poles in a fight for their freedom. Initially, he was successful in defeating the Russians but eventually the rebellion was put down by overwhelming forces. he was admired by the russians he fought and they tried to return his sword as a gesture of admiration. Eventually, he went to live in Switzerland where Napolean offered him a command in his army since some of his best troops were polish. Kosciuszko refused and he died in Switzerland.
