Online Study of Injury Risk in Snow Skiing

Dr. Jeffrey Hadley, of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at The Johns Hopkins University, has recently begun the first-ever online study of injury risk in snow skiing.

With the help of thousands of skiers on the WWW, the specific conditions under which skiing injuries are most likely will be spelled out for the first time. By using the power of the Internet, this study will be able to quantify the injury risk associated with many factors, including skiing ability, snow conditions, difficulty of terrain, type of bindings, and even how 'athletic' you rate yourself.

Over the next several ski seasons, this study has the potential to provide an unprecedented increase in what we know about skiing injuries, and how to prevent them.

As a member of the study, you would be asked to complete a brief Personal Skiing Report for every day you ski. One unique aspect of this study is that injury information will be collected only for those injuries sustained over the course of the study; you will not be asked about any past skiing injuries.

If you are unfortunate enough to sustain an injury on a given ski day this winter, additional questions are asked about what happened and why. Otherwise, you are instead asked a few questions about a selected fall that occurred (if any). The use of drop-down lists make completing the forms quite painless.
