Why is Limnology so Important?

Our bodies are mostly water and we consume more of it each day. It is important that we look after our fresh water resources since they are the major factor in sustaining life.

Living in the 1990's has made us all more aware of things around us and the environment. We must look after our waterways to maintain our high standards of health and living.

In our every day life, so many things revolve around water. Many Australians have expressed concern for water quality because it has in the past been taken for granted. Water is a precious commodity for many parts of the world, especially for those of us who live in extremely dry areas.

While it is important to keep the waterways clean for our drinking water supply, it is just as important to keep them clean for ecological and recreational purposes. Water is used for sports such as boating, swimming, and fishing. Rowers are especially keen on keeping our water safe. Many Olympic personalities have asked people in Australia to become more aware of the waterways around us.

It is important to raise awareness. Limnology is only a fancy way of describing the monitoring of waterways, and everyone can stay aware if they have the right amount of dedicaton.

If we neglect our waterways now, it might mean savings for the short-term. But in the long-term, neglected waterways could mean a lot of money will need to be spent trying to clean them up. Doing things right now will save money over time, and the water around us will be so much better for everyday use, recreation, and for the aquatic life therein.
