Phosphate and Nitrate Content
|
These two tests allow us to understand whether sewage has leaked into the water. If the phosphate and nitrate levels are too high, diseases could breed within the water posing a threat to the community. There is another reason why these two readings might be high, however. In autumn, when the leaves are transported from the storm drains to the river, the phosphate and nitrate levels tend to rise. This is a natural cycle and should not create a huge increase in your results. Phosphate is also present within certain detergents and other soap products. A high phosphate level may indicate leakage from nearby houses. Nowadays, we are able to get phosphate-free products that do not harm our waterways. Try to find the cause of your results. If you suspect that it is a sewage leak, please contact your local council because it could be a major problem. |
