pH

The pH test shows us how acidic or basic our waterways are. This is an essential part of limnology, because pH plays a vital role in the well-being of aquatic life. pH is the measure of hydrogen ions in the water and has a range of 0-14, where 0-6 is acidic and 8-14 is basic or alkaline.

If the water has a pH of 7 it is said to be neutral and normal. Most rivers and lakes do have a normal pH. It can, and does, go higher or lower depending on the weather and other conditions. Anything below 5 or above 9 is considered to be unsafe and needs attention.
