Investigating Micro-Organisms

Aim/Purpose:

To look at the micro-organisms in the water sample

Apparatus:

• stick (from broom)
• coat hanger
• stocking
• small bottle
• needle and thread
• microsope with clear dish
• container with lid
• water sample from your local water body

Method:

• Bend the coat hanger into a circle
• Bend hook around the stick and hold it there with tape or wire
• secure open end of the stocking on the hanger
• and on the other end, secure a small bottle with wire
• Use this device in your local river and take a few samples. Store in a container with lid

• Take it back to a lab and analyze it with a microsope. Report what you saw

Conclusion:

• Using a book with a chart of micro-organisms (found at your local library), identify the micro-organisms that are present in your water sample.
