Who Compiles the Information?

There are two main groups who collect and compile the data -- the government and independent organizations.

The government researches the waterways and assesses the water quality. The data that they collect is then made available, usually free of charge, to everyone.

There are also independent organizations that collect their own data and alert the public when it is needed. We value these organizations very much because they act as a watchdog for our rivers.

Recently, the communities are becoming involved in doing these kind of projects. Between the governments, independent organizations, and the local communities, our waterways appear to be in good hands.

Who Wants the Information?

The main organizations that collect limnological data have already been mentioned. But if you are testing independently, mostly it is your local council or government that wants the information. The information that you collect is important to them, because they are the ones who have to decide whether the water is safe enough for people to play in or even to drink.

Is Limnology Fun?

Of course it is! In Australia, millions of students are now involved in Limnology, investigating the rivers in their area. There are programs called "Water Watch" that help the public, including students, to get involved in limnological research and become mentally and physical aware of the environment around them. Paul is currently in this program and finding it extremely rewarding.

You too can be in the fun. Don't miss out because you will be missing a lot of action. It is also great to be outside and with real people sometimes rather than staying on-line all the time. Paul must admit that he is a computer nerd, but one can change and one must get out and experience the wonders of Mother Nature.
