DOUGLAS SOUTHALL FREEMAN

Pulitzer Prize winning biographer/historian


Douglas Southall Freeman was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. His family later moved to Richmond when he was a child. Freeman attended the University of Richmond and later received a scholarship for John Hopkins University where he studied history and economics, receiving a Ph.D. degree.

Upon returning to Richmond, Freeman was on the staff of the Richmond Times Dispatch. In 1915, he became the editor of the afternoon paper the News Leader.

Soon afterward, Freeman became a national literary figure due to the publication of his work, a biography entitled R. E. Lee. He died at the age of 67 on June 13, 1953.
