JEFFERSON HOTEL
Based on the Villa Medici in Rome, the Jefferson hotel was the creation of the firm of Carrere and Hastings. Funded by Major Lewis Ginter,(See Lewis Ginter for more information)the hotel was opened on October 31, 1895. It was used in the filming of such movies as My Dinner with Andre and First Kid.
BERKELEY PLANTATION
The birthplace of President William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States, Berkeley Plantation is a part of the James River Plantations (which is a combination of such plantation-estates). Berkeley Manor, a Georgian brick Mansion on Berkeley Plantation, shows how life was for the eighteenth and nineteenth rural society.
Berkeley, believed to be yet another site of the nation's first Thanksgiving, shows reeanactments of that first Thanksgiving every fall.
ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Set on Church Hill in Henrico County, St. John's Church is remembered for the convention of Virginia delegates who met there in 1775 to discuss the rebelling of English rule. It is here that Patrick Henry made his famous "Liberty or Death" speech which encouraged American independence of the following year.
WILLIAM BYRD PARK
Home of the Carillon, Virginia's World War II memorial, William Bryd Park was named for the city's founder(William Byrd II).
HENRICUS HISTORICAL PARK
This is the site of the second permanent English settlement in what was then the New World. Signs tell what life was like for settlers living in Henricus.
On September 15, Henricus Publick Day is held to reenact the wedding of John Rolfe and Lady Rebecca(also known as Pocahontas). Visitors can participate in the 17th century religious service, attend the wedding service, and get a feel(and taste) if life in 17th century America.
