INTRODUCTION TO RICHMOND

Arthur Ashe, John Marshall, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and Ellen Glasgow once called Richmond home. Their lives mingle with Richmond's past. Beginning when Captains Smith and Newport discovered Powhatan's settlement on the James River in 1607, Richmond has made its mark in history. The capital of the Virginia Colony, it was a match that ignited fiery words during the Revolutionary War, capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and home to Monument Avenue and Hollywood Cemetery. Past Richmonders were led by their spirit...whether it be the glory of triumph, or the burn of anger. Such spirit kindled life in Richmond. And it still does.
