ARTHUR ASHE
Former tennis star Arthur Ashe was born on July 10, 1943 at St. Phillip's hospital in Richmond. His national tennis rating was from on to three in the seasons of 1968 - 1976. In 1975, Ashe was rated best in the world. Among his tournament winnings were the United States, Australian, French, and Italian opens; also the 1975 Wimbledon championship. Dying of the AIDS virus (combined with pneunomia) in 1993, Arthur Ashe is honore(in Richmond) by the Arthur Ashe community center on the Boulevard and his statue on Monument Avenue.
