Fashion design is an up and growing field, not only for consumers, but for designers as well. Even though I have an excellent understanding of how competitive a field it is, I am still intrigued by it enough to pursue some interest I have had in it. No one, really showed me how to sew, so when I first started I did so by hand, but have became more efficient on the machine. I recommend both types of sewing because it shows the artist's style in different forms , as not everything can be sewn on a machine. For example, a pair of clear plaster boots that I found ugly, I took bleach satin material and sewed it over the plastic. This all had to be done by hand which can be tedious, but rewarding.
My advice to those interested in the fashion industry is to keep their creative eye open and out of the ordinary, because those are the designers who make it. But also be sure it is your own style, Because it would be so much more enjoyable to wear that way!
Going to thrift shop can be a real fashion experience. A good time to go is in March. Go to thrift shops near areas where rich people live. Lots of them come from up north, then in March they go back up north. Before they go they get rid of lots of things so they don't have to pack it all up and take it back home. You can get basic clothes, and wear them as is...or better yet, find clothes with great trims or buttons. you can sew them or glue them onto your jeans, cloth purses and other things.
