The Eleven City Ice skating-tour

The Eleven City Cross

In 1909 the management instructed some people to design a sign of honour for the completers of the Eleven City Skating-tour. There were made many designs . Eventually they took a cross that was based on the cross that M.E. Hepkema received, when he completed the Eleven City Skating-tour by bike.

In the tour of 1997 was a huge commotion about the Eleven City Cross. Because the sealpost of Hindeloopen wasn't visible very well, a few skaters rode on. Some skaters came back, but Piet Kleine rode on. Of course he did that by accident. First it seemed that there was no problem. Chief of that area Gerardus Bijker said: "There are enough proves that he was here." However, after the finish the management disqualified Piet Kleine. He didn't get a place in the classification, but he did get the Eleven City Cross. Piet Kleine was angry and refused the Cross, In the Netherlands it aroused hilarity. There's a song released called: 'Piet, vergeet je stempel niet'. That means in English: 'Piet, don't forget your stamp'.
